Adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) was described in 1971 by Petty and Ashbaugh. Since that time it has been reported in association with many disease entities. We report a case in which a patient with postanginal sepsis, also known as Lemierre's syndrome, had development of ARDS.

Sepsis and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: Recent Update

Severe sepsis or septic shock is characterized by an excessive inflammatory response to infectious pathogens. Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a devastating complication of severe sepsis, from which patients have high mortality. Advances in treatment modalities including lung protective ventilation, prone positioning, use of neuromuscular blockade, and extracorporeal membrane oxyge...

Neostigmine: an Unusual Cause of Post-operative Non-cardiogenic Pulmonary Oedema

Non cardiogenic pulmonary oedema (NCPE) continues to represent an important cause of morbidity and mortality with a large human and financial cost. Because of the resemblance of the clinical picture to that seen with respiratory distress of the neonate, NCPE has been referred to as the Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). In spite of the great improvement in supportive therapy, mortality...

Adult respiratory distress syndrome secondary to end-stage liver disease-successful outcome following liver transplantation.

The adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) complicating liver failure carries a 100% mortality. Two cases of ARDS that resolved following liver transplantation have been reported, one associated with acute allograft rejection, and the second due to sepsis. There is, however, a great reluctance to transplant these very-high-risk patients. We report the first series of patients with ARDS seco...

Fulminating chromobacterial septicaemia presenting as respiratory distress syndrome.

Respiratory distress syndrome occurs in a variety of clinical situations of which sepsis is one important precipitating factor. We have observed and successfully treated with high PEEP (positive end-expiratory pressure) a rare case of chromobacterial septicaemia complicated by an acute respiratory distress syndrome. We describe here the first reported case of a patient in this country surviving...

Adult respiratory distress syndrome as a severe immune reconstitution disease following the commencement of highly active antiretroviral therapy.

We report a patient who developed adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) secondary to Mycobacterium tuberculosis as an immune reconstitution disease. This complication occurred 14 days after the commencement of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for advanced HIV infection. The case emphasises that immune reconstitution can be an extremely aggressive complication of HAART.
